Al-Salam School
Since 2011, the conflict in Syria has devastated the country and the civilian population. Of all the victims, the ones who suffer most are children. Of the approximately 5 million refugees in Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan, nearly half are children – many of whom cannot go to school. According to UNICEF, more than 3 million children inside Syria no longer have access to education. Think about it: 8 million children no longer have hopes and dreams for a better future.
Until the Assad regime collapsed, Syrian children’s lives were constantly threatened by bombs, snipers, chemical weapons, and extremists. The future generation of Syria – the one that will have to rebuild the country and transition to democracy – is in jeopardy. Many have called Syrian children “the Lost Generation” due to the extent of war trauma they have suffered. Syrian children have seen their schools become prisons, or the targets of Assad’s barrel bombs and Russian air strikes. These children have seen their educational institutions transformed into military prisons or rubble.
Yet, the Lost Generation must survive. We must do what we can to restore education in those areas of Syria where it is safe to do so.
The Foundation to Restore Equality and Education in Syria (FREE-Syria), and Aid All Syrians, two US-based non-profit organizations, are joining forces to reinstate education where possible. Together, FREE-Syria and Aid All Syrians are supporting free education, one child at a time, and one school at a time.
The Facts
One in four Syrian schools has been destroyed. That’s a quarter of the nation’s schools. Let’s rebuild where we can. Let’s help millions of children get back to school and back on track. Let’s promote education as the fundamental building block of a democratic country.
What we’re doing
The benefits of having a new school in a community offers advantages far beyond educating children: educated children turn into well-informed adults who can bring about change. The school will host night classes to benefit adults and children who need extra help. Additionally, the economic support will help the community rebuild and become more stable.
